Cleaning of Ceramic Packing
Cleaning of Ceramic Packing
Ceramic packing cleaning is divided into online cleaning (performed inside the tower) and offline cleaning (removed from the tower for external treatment). Both are suitable for different levels of contamination and operating conditions.
Online Cleaning
Suitable for lightly contaminated conditions where the tower has cleaning interfaces, with short downtime (1-3 days).
Method | Operation | Application |
Water Rinsing | High-pressure water spray at the top of the tower (5-15 MPa) | Loosened mud and salt scale |
Steam Purging | Introduce low-pressure steam (0.1-0.3 MPa) | Light oil scale |
Solvent Circulation | Pump in organic solvent for circulation cleaning | Polymers and coke |
Chemical Circulation | Circulate dilute acid or dilute alkali, then rinse with water | Water scale and oil scale |
Advantages: No disassembly required, short downtime; Disadvantages: Limited effectiveness for heavily soiled areas.
Offline Cleaning
Suitable for heavily soiled areas or where online cleaning is ineffective; downtime 5-15 days.
Steps: Unloading → Removing large scale deposits → Soaking and cleaning → Rinsing with clean water → Drying → Reassembly
Cleaning Method | Conditions | Application |
Acid Soaking | 3%-10% dilute hydrochloric acid, 4-8 hours | Scale |
Alkali Soaking | 2%-5% NaOH, 60-80℃, 2-4 hours | Grease |
Solvent Soaking | Acetone, toluene, etc. | Carbon deposits, polymers |
High-Pressure Water Jet | 20-30MPa | General contamination |
Heat Treatment | 400-800℃, 2-4 hours (for ceramics only) | Severe carbon deposits |
Advantages: Thorough cleaning, can remove damaged packing material; Disadvantages: High labor intensity, long downtime.
Comparison and Selection
Comparison Items | Online Cleaning | Offline Cleaning |

Applicable Contamination | Light to moderate | Moderate to heavy |
Operating Conditions | Recommendation
Light contamination, with cleaning interface | Online Cleaning
Heavy fouling, with damaged packing | Offline Cleaning
During major overhaul | Offline Cleaning
Summary
For lightly contaminated surfaces, online cleaning (water rinsing, steam, solvent circulation) is preferred, resulting in short downtime and low cost. For heavily contaminated surfaces, offline cleaning (immersion, high-pressure water jet, heat treatment) is recommended, providing thorough cleaning and removing damaged packing material. The high-temperature resistance of ceramic packing material allows it to withstand heat treatment during offline cleaning, offering a significant advantage.
